British Sandwich Week is a celebration of one of the most popular and iconic foods. Did you know the word ‘sandwich’ is named after Lord John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich? Lord John Montague would often visit casinos and rather than stopping for lunch, he would ask the waiters to bring him slices of meat between two pieces of bread. Other gamblers then started to order ‘the same as sandwich’, hence the name ‘sandwich’.
In Britain, we consume over 11.5 billion sandwiches each year and 3.5 billion are purchased from UK retail or for catering. With the Java Café having its own sandwich bar and a large variety of grab and go sandwiches, British Sandwich Week was definitely one to acknowledge and celebrate.
Colworth Park Conference and Events hospitality team have been creating new sandwiches to tie in with British Sandwich Week and launched these in the Java Café’s Grab & Go Selection. A range of breads have been used such as Tasca, flatbread, wraps, along with the classic sandwiches and baguettes.
All the new Tasca Bread options are fresh each day and homemade on site in our bakery by our hospitality team. To celebrate British Sandwich Week, they launched a variety of new fillings such as: BBQ Beef Brisket; Jerk Chicken with mixed leaf, pepper and sweetcorn; All Day Breakfast; Pulled Brisket & Salad; and many more.
